Room 4 Garden Art

Room 4 Poetry
This week room 4 have been flexing their poetry muscles. They started the week by writing some crazy nonsense poems.

We then used Shel Silverstein's poem 'NASTY SCHOOL' as inspiration to write poems about schools that teach students to do do all the things that students shouldn't do at school.

Horrible school
In horrible school you have to always swear and pull down people’s pants so you can see their underwear.
The teachers teach you to rip pages out of library books and how to be downright crooks.
You learn how to dump someone into a bin and make an awful din.
In swimming lessons you have to splash all of the water out of the pool that is one of the horrible things that happen at horrible school.
You learn how to trick the tooth fairy with fake vampire fangs and how to make very big bangs.
One of the many horrible rules is you must never ever have your homework done and you must spoil everyone’s fun.

Bad Habit School

At bad habit school it’s badder than bad.
The teachers don’t teach you anything
right because they teach you how to
shoot a kite.
They teach you how to strip down someone’s underwear so you
can see there bottom bare.
You learn how to break a chair and how to put ants in people’s underwear.
You learn how to make wee hoses and how to play a game called disgusting poses.
So that’s what they do at bad habit school and everybody that goes there becomes a fool.

The School of Horrors
At the school of horrors the teachers teach you to write on the wall and to miss school to go to the mall.
They show you how to pull down someone’s pants and to do a bad dance.
They teach us how to cheat on a test and be a big pest.

Rotten School
At Rotten school the teachers teach you how to poo and wee on the floor. They also teach you how to smash a door.
They teach you to pull the naughty finger and also teach you to be a bad singer.
At rotten school they teach you how to put chewing gum on people’s chairs and also how to make people burst into tears.

Horrorland School
At horrorland school you learn to be annoying pests and cheat on every test.
At horrorland school they teach you to pull the middle finger and how to be bad singer.
We learn how to always be late for school and to put paint in the pool.

INVENT-A-GAME
Over the past 2 weeks room 4 have been writing instructions for a game that they have invented.

First of all we looked at the game called 'Whackbat' that is played on Fantastic Mr Fox. We talked about the features that a set of instructions needs to explain how to play a game.
We then set about writing our instructions and creating a detailed drawing to accompany our instructions.
Come into room 4 and check the selection of games you can learn to play.

Room 4 Crime Solving Unit

On Monday room 4 established its crime solving unit. Everyone in room 4 created an agent ID card as part of our inquiry into forensic science.

Starting this week everyone in room 4 will begin training to become a detective with the Room 4 CSU. Each student will complete four training modules related to forensic science (fibre analysis and crime scene examination).

ROTATIONAL SYMMETRY

Recently room 4 have been creating some rotational symmetry patterns.

First of all we divided a cardboard circle into 1/8's. We copied one of the segments and drew a design on that. We shaded the other side of the segment in black. Then we traced over the segment onto each 1/8 of the circle.

We used a black pen to outline our pencil designs, coloured in our creations and finally cut them out.

Term 3 Inquiring into...

Last week room 4 began their 'Inquiring into..' focus by examining different fibres and fabrics. First of all we talked about the difference between fibre and fabrics.

Then we explored three different types of fabrics by describing what they felt like, what the fabric might be used for and how the fabric could have been made.

After that we used a magnifying lense to look at three natural fibres. We drew what the fibre looked like under the magnifying glass, described any patterns we could see and guessed whether the fibre came from a plant or an animal.

Once we had examined some natural fibres we looked at some synthetic fabrics and carried out the same process that we used on the natural fibres.

We then looked at some microscopic images of fibres and tried to guess from their appearance whether they were natural or synthetic. We finished by comparing natural and synthetic fibres using a venn diagram.

TERM 2 ROCKETS

Last term room 4 inquired into the world of rockets. We made balloon rockets, puff rockets and bottle rockets.

We examined the role that fins have on a rocket by creating two sets of fins and tested them on a puff rocket to see their effectiveness.

We explored Newton's third law of motion 'For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction' by creating balloon rockets, which we launched in our classroom.

Finally we used our new understanding about rockets to build and launch a bottle rocket. First of all our teacher created a control rocket. We then selected one feature on the rocket to modify. We predicted how our modified rockets would fly compared with the control rocket and tried to explain our predictions. After launching them we observed the differences between our rockets and the control rocket and tried to explain the differences. Check out the video clip below!

We had lots of fun launching our rockets. A special thanks to Gus's dad, Brian, who helped build and launched our rockets and to our caretaker Ian who built the launch pads that we used.
